Another Family Literacy Center in Detroit!

Here is an update on one of our domestic initiatives from Elder Larry Key, who manages the Family Literacy Center in Detroit and has recently expanded efforts through the opening of a second center!

The Family Literacy Center here in the Detroit Metropolitan area is doing well. Presently we are providing services to twenty five students. We have some students who were in the summer program, who have improved their reading skills greatly.

Some students have increased their reading level by one grade level. We have a waiting list because I presently don’t have enough tutors, but I am working to solve that problem soon.

We are hoping that we will be able to pay tutors in the near future if more funding comes in. With the help of the Lord, Helen and I have started another Family Literacy Center. This center is not outside of the city, it is in the heart of the Northwest Side of Detroit.

This center is located in a very hard pressed, poverty, unemployment, crime, drugs, and low income neighborhood. The building is very spacious and has internet. I was able to install a wireless router, this will allow for tutoring students with computers as well with the Family Literacy written component.

In order to recruit students, I spoke with the principals of two neighborhood elementary schools about Family Literacy Centers Inc. and I gave them information as well as a flyer.
We are planning to have a parade in the neighborhood and pass out flyers about the free literacy program.

At this time we have three volunteer tutors. In the near future we will be advertising on radio and television. We have established a board of advisors as well.

Thank you and all of the sponsors for allowing me and Operation Reach Back to be a part of this organization and to empower people of all ages to read in the Detroit area and to help individuals to become efficient readers.
